Description

This stunning Ajarakh coverlet was handmade in India's north and features thousands of tiny hand sewn kantha stitches. Our coverlets are made from 100% premium cotton, ensuring it’s soft, breathable, and just right for year-round use. Use it on it's own in Summer and as an extra layer of colour and warmth in Winter.

Each starts as a sheet of pure cotton, natural dyes like indigo, madder root, turmeric, jaggery, iron and pomegranate are applied by dying and using hand carved timber blocks. The layers are built up to create a work of art. Once reserved for King's these gorgeous prints are still only made in one small region of India's North. It is said that the true colours are only reached in one river as the mineral content is just right to create the exact hues that makes an Ajarakh print. It's not uncommon for the fabric to pass through the water 20 separate times throughout the whole process which can involve up to 30 steps and two weeks to complete. It's as authentic as it gets and ours are of course Fair Trade.

These are a truly special Wedding or house warming gift. Or use in your own home, on beds and couches, or as a wall feature.

Fair Trade from India. Sale includes the coverlet only, other bits and pieces are available separately.

FAQs

What's better for me, a comforter or a coverlet? We get asked this all the time, and it depends entirely on you. Do you run hot? Live in the tropics? Have a tiny tiny washing machine? Then the coverlet might be best for you. Do you love snuggly bedding? Do you always need a layer on? Do you have a washing machine with a central agitator? Then you would love a comforter. Both are great year round and are a complete dress for the bed, generous in size and have amazing prints and that pop... it might just come down to which pattern you love more....

How do I care for the coverlet? Life’s too short for high-maintenance bedding! Our coverlet is machine washable, just pop it in a laundry bag and wash alone on a gentle, cold cycle. Natural colours will bleed and soften over time and this is part of their beauty and uniqueness. Line dry in the shade or pop on the airing cycle in the dryer.

What size bed does this coverlet fit? This coverlet is perfect for Double, Queen and King size beds, it's a big rectangle and so the drape can be placed across the bed for a Queen or King, and top to tail for a Double or Queen. It's roughly 225cm x 260cm and the pattern can run either way.

Is this coverlet handmade? Yes! Ajarakh coverlets are made using traditional hand block printing and dabu techniques. Want to know more? Click here to read all about it.

Can I return the coverlet if I’m not satisfied? Of course! We want you to love your purchase! If you’re not happy completely happy, you can return it within 30 days for a swap or credit. Check out our full returns policy for more details.
